You have a responsibility to be in charge of the classroom and the education of all the students and you can't do that effectively if they see you as one of them. If you blur the boundaries too much, the student starts expecting you to give them special treatment, not report them for breaking the rules, not bust them for cheating, not fail them if they don't do the work, etc. There is a power difference between a teacher and student. Teaching is something I am passionate about so I will be going into the field regardless of what people might tell me. As such, I was called a "teacher's pet" and all that but they truly helped me become who I am today. Growing up, I didn't have many friends - if at all - so I usually befriended the teacher. It was to impact the lives of students as how my teachers have impacted my life. I remember the exact moment of when and why I chose what I did. I know I've wanted to become a teacher for at least a year now. However, is it that bad to be friends in school? Why can't they be both? I acknowledge that there are some things teachers and students can't do if they treated each other like their actual friends.
